Many shops breathe a sigh of relief the moment their products are approved in Merchant Center, then miss the one thing that actually moves the needle: the title. Google Shopping has no search bar where customers type your brand name. Google decides purely from the feed title whether your product matches a search and gets shown. An approved product with a weak title is like an open shop with no sign out front.
Why the title decides visibility
The title does two jobs at once: it is the most important matching signal (does the product fit the search?) and the first text the buyer sees (do they click or not?). Together they decide whether your ad budget works or gets wasted.
The formula for strong titles
Build titles from important to unimportant, because the first 70 characters matter most:
- Brand + product type + key attributes + variant as the backbone.
- Fashion: brand → gender → product → colour → size → material.
- Tech/accessories: brand → product → model → key feature.
- Beauty/care: brand → product → use → size.
Example: “Two-Phase Conditioner” becomes “Morfose Collagen 2-Phase Leave-in Conditioner 400 ml”.
The most common title mistakes
- ALL CAPS: shouting titles look promotional and break the guidelines.
- Shop name or slogan in the title: wastes valuable space and relevance.
- Emojis and special characters get ignored or trigger disapprovals.
- Too long: Google truncates past ~150 characters, so put what matters first.
- Missing keywords: without product type and attributes, Google can't match it.
- Keyword stuffing lowers quality instead of raising it.
The title alone isn't enough
A strong title works best with clean attributes beside it: product type, GTIN and a concrete description. They give Google extra signals and help decide which searches you show up for at all.
How to check your titles in seconds
You don't have to guess which titles are weak. Feed Doctor reads your public catalogue and flags exactly the titles in all caps, without keywords or with missing attributes. It's free and there's no signup: just enter your store address and scan.
An approved product earns nothing while its title doesn't match a search. The title is your most important feed attribute.
If you want to check your whole catalogue for title and attribute quality at once: Feed Doctor shows the issues, and on request we optimise your feed for you.
For Shopify stores, Feed Doctor sits right in the App Store, at apps.shopify.com/feed-doctor-1. Install it, let it read your catalogue, see which titles are weak: the diagnosis costs nothing.
